Blepharoplasty or " eyelid surgery " is the ideal way to rejuvenate the eyes. In particular, it removes the "sad and tired" look caused by sagging skin and drooping eyelids.
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to correct :
- Droopy, heavy upper eyelids;
- Fatty bags or hollow areas under the eyes;
- Excess skin around the eyelids (often responsible for a tired look);
- Marked folds and sagging skin on the upper or lower eyelids.
There are three types of eyelid surgery:
- Upper Blepharoplasty: removes excess skin from the upper eyelids, as well as any associated excess fat.
- Lower blepharoplasty: removes bags under the eyes and tightens the skin of the lower eyelids.
- Upper and lower blepharoplasty: combines the two previous surgeries.
What are our different eyelid surgery techniques?
Upper eyelid surgery
The surgeon first makes hidden incisions in the natural palpebral crease. He then removes the excess skin and fat before closing the incisions.
During this procedure, it is also possible to correct any ptosis (drooping of the eyelid), particularly if the upper eyelid no longer opens properly.
Lower eyelid surgery
To eliminate bags under the eyes, the surgeon makes an incision behind the eyelashes (conjunctival route) before removing or distributing the fat. If necessary, excess skin is removed to harmonize the look.
Blepharoplasty can be combined with canthopexy. This procedure raises the outer corner of the eye to create an almond-shaped look.
Upper and lower blepharoplasty
This technique treats the upper and lower eyelids simultaneously. The aesthetic surgeon harmonizes the volumes around the eye using the two techniques described above.
What happens before your blepharoplasty in Paris?
1. Initial consultation
During this initial consultation, your surgeon will analyze the periorbital region to determine whether your expectations are compatible with current techniques.
He then performs a functional evaluation of your eyes, as well as a complete clinical examination. This step guarantees your safety and the smooth running of the future operation.
2. Ophthalmological check-up and photographs
Before undergoing cosmetic eye surgery, the operating surgeon must perform an ophthalmological check-up. This includes:
- Precise measurements of eyelid and eyebrow position;
- The search for dry eyes or lagophthalmos;
- Standardized photography for pre- and post-operative follow-up.
3. Surgical planning
During this phase, the surgeon determines the areas to be treated. He also determines the type of anesthesia to be used (local, sedation potentiated or general).
He will also offer you a simulation of the expected result so that you can project yourself before validating the estimate that will be proposed to you at the end of the first consultation.
4. Medical preparation
Before undergoing surgery, you will need to follow a few prescriptions, including:
- Discontinue certain medications (aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs) to ensure proper healing;
- Smoking cessation (delays healing and increases the risk of complications);
- Verification of medical history and informed consent.
What is the procedure for your blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery in Paris is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on the type of procedure chosen, it lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes. The operation is performed as follows:
- Preoperative marking: the patient participates to precisely define the areas to be corrected;
- Anaesthesia: local for the upper eyelids alone, general if the procedure includes the lower eyelids;
- Incisions and removal of excess skin and fat;
- Thin, concealed sutures.
Average length of intervention :
- Upper blepharoplasty: 30 to 45 minutes
- Lower blepharoplasty: 45 to 60 minutes
- Upper and lower blepharoplasty: 1h to 1h30
In some cases, the cosmetic surgeon will suggest one or more complementary procedures, such as a cure for ptosis (drooping eyelids), a canthopexy or peri-ocular lipofilling, depending on each patient's needs.
What are the post-blepharoplasty after-effects?
After eyelid surgery in Paris, it is normal to observe :
- Swelling and bruising: these appear rapidly and disappear within 1 to 2 weeks;
- Vision disorders: temporarily blurred or irritated vision, normal and reversible.
In the case of local anesthesia, you can go home immediately after the operation. If the operation is performed under general anesthesia, you will have to wait a few hours under supervision before leaving the clinic.
The sutures will be removed between the third and seventh day. You should be able to return to work within 5 to 10 days.
Daily care consists mainly of applying cold compresses and eye ointments. You should also avoid rubbing your eyes and sun exposure for 2 weeks.
The final result is visible 1 to 2 months after the operation.
What are the possible complications?
Complications remain rare, but can include:
- An asymmetry that requires a minor touch-up;
- Dry eyes or incomplete closure of the eyelids, usually transient;
- Retrobulbar hematoma: very rare but serious, requiring urgent treatment.
Post-operative follow-up is systematic. It is mandatory and serves to secure the remission period in order to guarantee an optimal result.
